Blepharoplasty, also referred to as eyelid surgery or eyelid lifts, improves the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. The purpose of eyelid surgery is to give patients a rejuvenated appearance to the surrounding area of your eyes, making you look more rested and alert. Cosmetic eyelid surgery enhances the eyelids also providing a more youthful appearance.
Dr. Etai Funk specializes in plastic surgery of the face and neck exclusively and has an intimate understanding of eyelid anatomy and aesthetics. Many patients have chosen Dr. Funk as their blepharoplasty surgeon to correct drooping upper eyelifts and puffiness (bags) under their eyes. Below are a series of photos from patients who have received eyelid surgery at Funk Facial Plastics as well as frequently asked questions regarding blepharoplasty.

This patient underwent upper blepharoplasty or eyelid lift in addition to lower eyelid surgery with fat repositioning. The repositining of the fat in the lower eyelid prevents a hollowed out appearance which can occur if you simply remove the fat in someone is already recessed in that area.

Sometimes eyelid surgery is insufficient and a browlift is necessary for certain patients. This patient had an endsocopic browlift, upper eylid lift, and extended lower eyelid surgery.

Lower eyelid blepharoplasty or eyelid lift for excess fat truly provided a more restful and youthful result for this patient.

This patient presented with festoons of the lower eyelids. These are areas of redundant skin and swelling due to environmental causes and aging. She underwent direct excision of festoons with meticulous closure.

Eyelid surgery or Blepharoplasty should create subtle results and lead to a refreshed appearance creating more attention on the eyes themselves and not the eyelids. Below is a patient before and after upper eyelid surgery with lower eyelid skin pinch.
Can surgery for eyelid symmetry be performed?
Eyelid assymetry commonly occurs in the upper eyelids in many individuals. Concomitant eyebrow assymetry frequently occurs with this. Blepharoplasty or upper eyelid surgery or eyelid lift can makes these eyelids more symmetric while at the same time more youthful, vibrant, and alert.
Patient with upper eyelid assymetry. Notice how the light reflects nicely on her right eye in the before photo (top) but that same light reflection is not seen in the left eye. With corrective blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery, the light reflexes appear even on both eyes demonstrating that the eyelids are now symmetric.

Can Dr. Funk improve the bags under my eyes?
The goal in lower blepharoplasty or a lower eyelid lift is to improve that tired or puffy appearance to area beneath the eye. With a lower eyelid lift, you can also tighten the lower eyelid skin to remove the crepe, thin, and wrinkled appearance in this area. The "bags under the eyes" are due to fat that has started to push on a weakened wall of connective tissue that holds the fat back. Lower blepharoplasty addresses this fat through an incision just below the lower lid or from the inside through the pink (conjunctiva) portion of the eye. If necessary, fat can be repositioned to fill the tear trough area and improve the dark circles under the eyes. Dr. Funk typically would remove the excess fat and trim some of the excess skin with lower eyelid surgery to create a more rested, refreshed, and youthful appearance.
This patient had a small skin cancer which was removed on the left lower eyelid and reconstructed. At the same time, she had the bags under her eyes addressed with lower eyelid blepharoplasty.

Is Eyelid Surgery common for men?
Eyelid surgery is a common procedure for men with significant hooding of skin over the eyes and/or bags under the eyes. This provides a more youthful and refreshed appearance to a man as is evident in the before and after photos after upper eyelid surgery of the man below.
Can Dr. Funk improve the assymetry in my eyelids?
Upper eyelid assymetry can be corrected with blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery. The crease in the upper eyelid is created by a muscle and by changing where that crease is located and the amount of skin that is excised, eyelids can be made more symmetric with eyelid surgery.
The shape of your eyelid should not change after surgery aside from removing the excess skin surrounding the eyelid. The same almond shape will be retained. Sometimes, the lower eyelid may need to be tightened if you already have a saggy or droopy lower eyelid. You can expect your eyelid to look more refreshed, youthful and less tired.

Many patients complain of the puffiness under the eyes or heavy appearance to their eyelids. Patient may complain of tired looking eyes. One of the first areas where a person begins to notice the signs of aging is surrounding the eyes. It is typically the first area a person will inspect when looking in the mirror, and the eyes are where our attention is directed during a patient-doctor consultation. It is important to address the upper and lower eyelids separately when discussing eyelid rejuvenation surgery.

Eyelid lift or Blepharoplasty for severe hooding and visual compromise

As a person ages there is an excess of skin of the upper eyelid and loss of a defined upper eyelid crease. It is also common to see a small amount of bulging fat in the upper eyelid near the nose. It is essential to pay close attention to the position of the eyebrows as low/sagging brows can also lead to that tired upper eye appearance. Typically an upper blepharoplasty removes a small sliver of skin leaving the scar where the natural crease resides. In addition, if necessary, a small amount of fat is removed for contouring.
This patient desired a more refreshed yet natural appearance to her eyelids. Upper blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery was performed and a skin pinch was taken of the lower eyelids.

Blepharoplasty will allow for mild improvement of the fine wrinkles surrounding the eye. However, these wrinkles are best addressed with resurfacing techniques such as laser or chemical peel and Botox®.
